I planned on making calzones this week. I was going to make the dough from scratch, but once at the grocery store I saw the ready-made refrigerated pizza dough and I thought, "Why the hell not?"
Well, because it sucks, that's why.
Needless to say the calzones came out looking like crap and not tasting much better. It was a shortcut that I knew better than to take, but I got lazy.
I've also found that these shortcuts are a very bad idea: Defrosting meat the day it's needed ... in the microwave. Cutting potatoes that you need well ahead of time. (I was young and stupid and didn't realize you had to soak them in water.) Not blind baking your pie shell. Not refrigerating your dough before using it.
Sadly, even though I know better, I sometimes find myself trying to take the same shortcuts again and again because I'm pressed for time and in a rush. I'm sure we all do it- or at least I'm hoping I'm not the only one.
What are some shortcuts that you've tried that just don't work? Were they reccomended shortcuts or something you tried on your own?
