Experience
Shamard Charles, MD, MPH, is a public health doctor with over five years of experience in health promotion and health communications. He served as a senior health journalist for NBC News, leading the network’s health and medical coverage including groundbreaking reporting during Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Harvey.
He is also no stranger to the broadcast booth, having previously been featured on NPR for his reporting on the dearth of black men in medicine. More recently, he expanded his coverage internationally, writing and producing stories in Nigeria covering a variety of public health topics including vaccines and vaccine-preventable diseases. His work can be found on the NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, NBC News Now, TODAY, NBCNews.com, and the Grio.
Education
Dr. Charles has a medical degree from the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University, a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and a Bachelor of Arts from New York University.
