Classic From-a-Can 7-Layer Dip Recipe

This easy 7-layer dip recipe, adapted from, is the one my wife made during our Husband-and-Wife 7-Layer Dip Duel. Aside from opening some cans and jars, all you have to do is quickly brown some ground beef and make some fresh guacamole — or you could just buy it prepared to make this that much easier.

Not counting the time it took to let the beef cool to room temperature, she spent about 25 minutes making this stuff. That's about a twelfth of the time it took me to make my opposing All-From-Scratch 7-Layer Dip.

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup guacamole
  • 1 (16 ounce) can refried beans
  • 4 cups shredded cheddar–Monterey Jack cheese blend
  • 8 ounces sour cream
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 1 (2.25 ounce) can black olives, chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup chopped green onions

    In large skillet, brown ground beef. Set aside to drain and cool to room temperature, about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, make guacamole.

    Spread beans into bottom of a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish. Sprinkle 2 cups shredded cheese on top of beans. Layer beef on top of cheese. Spread sour cream slowly, to keep your layer neat, on top of beef. Spread guacamole on top of sour cream. Pour salsa over guacamole; spread evenly. Layer remaining shredded cheese over guacamole. Toss black olives, tomatoes, and green onions on top.

    Serve immediately or refrigerate overnight and serve cold.
