Paddington Burgers Recipe | Cook the Book

These Paddington Burgers from Dinah Buchholz's The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook might just be the ideal back to school shopping meal. You see, these were the burgers that Harry and Hagrid sat down to after an exhaustive day of shopping for Hogwarts school supplies, a list that included such varied items as one cauldron (pewter, standard size 2), three sets of plain black work robes, and a copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander, all purchased on Diagon Alley. Not exactly your standard no. 2 pencils and spiral bound notebooks.

Whether you're shopping for wizard or muggle school supplies, you can still round out the day with these hearty, Harry Potter-inspired burgers. More of a meatloaf formed into a patty, these are bulked up with breadcrumbs and browned onions and garlic powder. Instead of going for regular burger buns, I went with English muffins, a nod to Paddington Station, the London train station where Hagrid sent Harry home after their shopping adventure. A bit of spicy English mustard and a pile of caramelized onions finishes off these back-to-school burgers.

As always with our Cook the Book feature, we have five (5) copies of The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook to give away this week.

  • 1 1/2 pounds extra-lean ground beef
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 onion, chopped and sautéed until well-browned
  • 1 cup fresh bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Sautéed sliced onions, for serving
  • English mustard, for serving
  • Lettuce, for serving
  • Tomato slices, for serving

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and mix well.

  2. Spray a skillet with cooking spray and heat the skillet. Form the mixture into patties and cook on both sides over medium-high heat until well-browned. Transfer to paper-towel-lined plate and repeat until the beef mixture is used up. Or cook on a grill until well done.

  3. Serve in toasted hamburger buns with sautéed sliced onions, English mustard, lettuce, and tomato.
