This twist on the classic Old Pal cocktail uses lighter-flavored Aperol instead of Campari, and brings in bitter Cocchi Americano in the place of dry vermouth. It's an easy-drinking combination.
A note on the rye: I prefer a lower proof rye for this one, like Old Overholt or Templeton, both of which come in at 80 proof.
1 ounce rye whiskey
1 ounce Aperol
1 ounce Cocchi Americano
Orange twist, for garnish
Fill a mixing glass 2/3 full with ice. Add rye, Aperol, and Cocchi Americano. Stir until well chilled, about 20 seconds.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with orange twist and serve.
