Special Sauce: Frank Bruni on Bipartisan Love of Meatloaf

When I asked Frank Bruni in part two of his Special Sauce interview about why the Obamas didn't contribute a meatloaf recipe to his new cookbook, A Meatloaf in Every Oven, he said that he and Jennifer Steinhauer, his co-author, did reach out to them, but to no avail. He was okay with that: "If a presidential administration is spending its energies and its concerns on something other than meatloaf, I say great. As a tax payer, as an American citizen, as a patriot, I love meatloaf, but it's not the most important thing on the national agenda. I will admit that right now."

I pressed him on many important issues, both meatloaf-related and otherwise, such as which meat loaf recipe he likes better, his late mom's or Mario Batali's, and what his family thinks of his multi-faceted career. ("My little brother always jokes I don't have a career, I have an attention deficit disorder.")

And as for why no Trump meatloaf recipe appears in his bipartisan tome (Republicans Susan Collins and Paul Ryan and Democrats Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer contributed recipes), you're just going to have to listen to find out. It's a Special Sauce episode like no other, filled with Bruni's insights on meatloaf and presidents alike.
