A Note From Ed: Special Sauce has become one of my favorite creative outlets in the 22 months we've been recording this podcast. It is an honor to be in the studio with the likes of Tom Colicchio, Barbara Lynch, and David Simon, having real, in-depth conversations about food and life. We've got big plans for Special Sauce this fall, but while we take a break to formulate them, we wanted to highlight a couple of our most popular episodes to date. This one, Kenji's very first appearance on the podcast, includes so many amusing and thought-provoking stories from him that it merits a second listen.
Special Sauce and Serious Eats have come a long way in the intervening months, and so has Kenji. He has become the most attentive dad I know, even as he's working on the second volume of his book (and sharing a few of the recipes from it here on Serious Eats). So enjoy this audio time capsule, and stay tuned in two weeks for what promises to be an incredible new season of the podcast, starting with two episodes featuring the great young actor Adam Driver. A special talent for Special Sauce, which seems only right.
I've known Serious Eats Managing Culinary Director J. Kenji López-Alt for a long time, but even I was surprised by what I learned when I interviewed him for the latest episode of the Serious Eats podcast, Special Sauce.
Wait until you hear his mom's reaction when he told her that he was going to become a cook after he graduated from MIT. And then there's the place in his house where he does a lot of his best thinking and emailing. (Let's just say that a special table is required to make sure he doesn't drop his laptop in the water.) Not to mention the story of an iconic rock star's security detail wrestling Kenji to the ground one cold winter day when they thought he was a stalker. (I'll let you listen to get the gory details on that one.) You'll also learn about the evolution of The Food Lab, what makes a post go viral, and what Kenji would do for a bag of frozen McDonald's fries.
Even if you've read every one of his columns on Serious Eats and every page of his weighty tome, The Food Lab: Better Home Cooking Through Science, you'll still find out some surprising—and funny—stuff about Kenji when you listen to Episode 2 of Special Sauce. I promise. In fact, I bet even his mom will learn some things.
