I'm on Team Savory Breakfast—anyone else with me? I'm far more interested in spicy chilaquiles than sweet French toast, and I've even been known to garnish my oatmeal with a little sriracha; I like to start my day with a little heat.
This smoothie satisfies all my breakfast desires with a spicy kick of jalapeño, creamy avocado, a hearty helping of greens, plus some tropical flavors to round things out.
Unlike kale, which can be a little bitter, chard makes for a drink that feels healthy without tasting aggressively 'green.' To keep the smoothie nice and cool, I've included frozen pineapple chunks in this recipe. Beyond just providing a nice frosty texture, the subtle sweetness of the pineapple balances out the savory ingredients in the drink.
The flavor of the avocado blends in seamlessly and doesn't stand out in the finished product, but it does lend an exceptionally rich, creamy texture. A little jalapeño gives a nice dose of warming heat, which makes this a particularly inviting smoothie for winter sipping, giving it that warm-you-from-the-inside-out quality that smoothies can't often claim.
