Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
In Savannah's Historic District, the Croque Monsieur ($8.50) at Papillote neatly bridges the gap between breakfast and lunch. Thin slices of ham and Swiss cheese that's warm, but not quite melted, are sandwiched between two toasted slices of bread. The top piece of gets dipped in crème fraîche before it's broiled, so it browns and bubbles up a lot like cheese.
True to its name, (croque means "crunch" in English), the bread is crisp with a resounding crunch, but since it's broiled, rather than pan-fried in butter, it's not at all greasy. If you're looking for the sandwich's egg-topped counterpart, a croque madame, swing by during brunch on Saturday or Sunday, and get the same sandwich, topped with a sunny side-up egg.
Note: the café is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
