Cereal Eats: Childhood and Cereal Commercials

Cereal Eats

Breakfastime musings about cereal.

Remember Mikey?

Since I know you all have been loyally following my column since its inception, waiting with baited breath for its appearance each week, you clearly know all the deep and intimate details of my painful cereal-deprived childhood. Or, um, if you've ever read anything I've written, you may have caught wind that my mom didn't buy sugary cereals when I was a kid.

I know, I know—I'm not the first and I won't be the last, broken record, tell us something new...WELL I CAN'T, OK? Clearly this has scarred me for life and I need an outlet to talk about it constantly.

Though she wouldn't get me sweet, sweet cereals, my mom couldn't prevent me from at least watching other people enjoying them—on commercials. Now, before you get on your high horse about TV pushing over-sugary foods on unsuspecting kids, remember this is a safe cereal circle of trust. Plus, those commercials heavily influenced me and I turned out fine, right? Well, I mean, I guess they worked, didn't they? Hmm, right, your point exactly.

Anyway, if you're still reading my rambles, we're talking about—you guessed it—favorite cereal commercials from when you were a kid! Come on, I know you got 'em. Heck, even Kenji, who claims to not like or eat cereal (...) can sing the Lucky Charms theme on command. I've mentioned before how the Corn Pops commercials always struck the deepest chord with me, with those cool 90's teens and their I-don't-care-attitudes. And in the end, they always got their Pops. As a huge Breaking Bad fan, I'm shocked I never saw this old Aaron Paul commercial, which is officially my new favorite.

Are you going to make me say it? Gotta have my Pops, yo! I also have been singing this jingle in my head for the past 12 years, so I gotta give it some love. It's actually a pretty tight track.

Ok cereal lovers and even you non-cereal-loving-Kenji-types—what were your favorite cereal commercials as a kid?
