Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
The city of Berkeley doesn't mess around when it comes to good food. And The Local Butcher Shop, a sustainable butchery just north of downtown, doesn't mess around when it comes to serious meats. The centerpiece of the space is an immense, stage-like table where entire sides of meat are broken down before your very eyes.
Even if the sight and scent of fresh, raw meat doesn't whet your appetite, go out of your way to try the sandwich of the day ($9)—especially if it involves roast beef. The Local Butcher has a way with its grass-fed roast, using half a pound of refreshingly beefy red meat to anchor a meticulously constructed meal.
This particular sandwich complemented the beef with blanched green beans, slices of provolone, and a hefty pinch of chopped parsley. Bits of red olive and minced shallot, along with a squeeze of lemon, gave the deep flavors of the meat just the right jolt of flavor. While every afternoon will bring with it a new combination of ingredients, the attention to detail and the quality of the beef make whatever's on offer a surefire bet.
