Name: Sam Bresnick
Location: New York and Providence, RI
Occupation: Brown University Student
Guilty Pleasures? I love a hearty bread pudding. I prefer if it's drizzled with melted chocolate and accompanied by a mound of vanilla ice cream, but I'll order it alone any day. I'll eat anything with pork belly anytime, too.
Describe your perfect meal. Bo ssäm with oysters, miso corn, and a healthy portion of kimchi.
What food won't you eat? Though I'm a pretty courageous eater, fish eyeballs rub me the wrong way.
Favorite food person? Has to be David Chang. The Momofuku restaurants always offer interesting tastes and novel combinations of ingredients. His fried chicken cook-off with Questlove was a thing of beauty.
When did you first realize you were a serious eater? When I was 4, I became infatuated with Chinese soup dumplings from Joe's Shanghai. It wasn't long before I demanded each weekend that my father whisk me from the Upper West Side to Chinatown so that I could get my fix of these fine dainties. My attention jumped from dumplings to beef jerky and then to noodles, and by kindergarten I was obsessed with food.
What do your family and friends think of your food obsessions? My family loves eating, so they are more than happy to accompany me on food treks. Many of my friends come to me for restaurant recommendations, and I think they will be happy to see me furthering my gastronomic knowledge at Serious Eats.
Favorite food sites or blogs? Other than Serious Eats, I find myself checking out Eater and Grub Street.
Everyone has a go-to person they call for restaurant recommendations. Who's yours? My dad and I have made a habit of regularly exchanging restaurant info. When I return from college for breaks, he is always there with a new spot to try.
What is your favorite meal of the day and where do you get it? I am a big proponent of the mid-afternoon snack. If I'm home and feeling peckish around 4:30, I'll go to Jerusalem Restaurant for a falafel wrap. Since I'm a devoted meat eater, I sometimes need something more robust, in which case I go to Mel's Burger Bar.
Do you ever cook? What is the best dish you make? Though I like to cook new dishes whenever I can, there are a few standbys that I fall back on. My favorite of these is chicken katsu with shaved cabbage and brown rice. I also make a tasty fish taco with slaw.
