Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
Now that the weather is turning sunny and breezy, the patio at the beloved New Orleans hot dog joint Dat Dog has been filling up on weekend afternoons with folks looking for a quality frankfurter, a cold brew, and maybe an order of cheese fries topped with crawfish etouffee. Just in time, Dat Dog is expanding like crazy, from a tiny hole-in-the-wall on Freret Street to a giant space across the street and a new location on Magazine Street (complete with a full bar, which you didn't even know you wanted at a hot dog place, but now that you have it, you would never go back).
You can't go wrong here with a classic wiener, topped with anything from guacamole to wasabi. But if you're in the mood to change things up a bit, the Sea Dog is a pleasant change of pace. The "dog" is simply a long strip of tempura-battered cod, lightly fried and served on a sweet and buttery hot dog bun. Top it with slaw, sweet relish, and tartar sauce for just the right combination of crunchy, tangy, and creamy. Add the aforementioned crawfish fries (OK yes, the etouffee makes them a bit soggy, but the full effect is decadent enough that it's really hard to care), and you have the makings of a fine afternoon.
