When Taco Bell first released the Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Taco (that was the taco made with a Doritos shell, in case you needed reminding), America freaked out, welcoming the taco chain's newest creation with mouths open wide. Then came the Cool Ranch version...and fast food fanatics everywhere, once again, rejoiced.
Now, the folks at Taco Bell and Frito-Lay have joined forces to bring us the next generation of taco-chip hybrids: the Doritos Locos Tacos Doritos in both Nacho Cheese and Cool Ranch flavors. That's right, a chip version of the taco version of a chip. So meta.
Each bag comes packed with two chip varieties: the classic Doritos flavor (Nacho Cheese or Cool Ranch, depending on what bag you crab) and a "crunchy taco" flavor inspired by Taco Bell's signature hard-shell taco. Here's the deal: you eat them both at the same time to recreate the flavor symphony that is Doritos Locos Taco. Sounds kind of stupid, right? I really wanted to hate these, but here I am, fingers coated in taco chip dust, fighting the urge to finish off the bag for lunch.
"I can taste the iceberg lettuce! And shredded cheese! And ground beef taco seasoning.." we all exclaimed when shoving these into our mouths. The heavily dusted "crunchy taco" flavored chips have so much of that generic Taco Bell taste. The experience is uncannily similar to eating a real Taco Bell taco (or anything else on the menu, really), heavy with that cumin-and-paprika "Mexican" flavor.
Have you seen Doritos Locos Tacos in stores yet? Tried 'em?
