Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
It's true, the entry into BFD (Big Front Door) in North Park really is sizable, but it's understood that the sandwich shop's name isn't only named after an architectural feature. The sandwiches themselves are a "BFD", particularly the Turkey Day ($9), smoked turkey breast with candied bacon stuffing, cranberry, and a drizzle of gravy on a torpedo roll.
Besides its sheer size, what's most impressive about this sandwich (and everything BFD sells) is all the components (except for the bread) are made fresh, from scratch, in house...including the turkey. Whole breasts are smoked in the large on-site kitchen, then sliced thin and stacked with the stuffing and cranberry relish (made from fresh cranberries). The roll comes from Sadie Rose, one of the best bread makers in town.
The bacon and turkey are good and savory, but the cranberry does tend to do most of the talking. If you're concerned it'll skew too sweet, ask for it on the side so you can do some portion control.
I've never made it through a BFD sandwich on my own, but if you've got room to spare, try a side of the chipotle potato salad, or the red curry quinoa. A small is just $1.50. They also have bottled craft sodas and a solid selection of cookies.
