In this great nation of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.
First opened in 1988, and now in several infectiously friendly and inviting settings, Barnaby's has been known for serving large portions of well-prepared comfort fare. In Houston, comfort fare often carries a Mexican accent, and the lineup at Barnaby's includes their plus-sized take on that taqueria staple, the torta.
Barnaby's redundantly monikered Mexican Carnitas Torta ($10.95 with fries) features a lengthy French-style loaf layered with carnitas, then topped with a profusion of shredded lettuce, a trio each of tomato slices, wedges of plump avocado, thick rings of red onion, and finally a smattering of crumbly cotija cheese. Like each of Barnaby's other menu items, this sandwich, especially with the side of fries, is a feast.
