Mexican fare—Tex Mex, too—is rarely attractive. This certainly rings true for the Torta de Tinga ($6.14 with cheese) at 100% Taquito in Houston. More so, the spicy beef brisket at the heart of the sandwich, the tinga, is unseen below a pile of shredded lettuce, slices of juicy tomatoes and ripe, soft avocado along with a bit of onion. At least the addition of the mild Chihuahua cheese is evident melted along the sides of the French bread-like bolillo.
Biting into the toasted roll as its unruly fillings struggle to stay contained, you do find the tender and piquant beef, and a fair amount of it, in this Mexican version of the sub sandwich. This is a tasty, messy meal that is over quickly. Dabbed generously with the spicy, thick chipotle sauce, it's even tastier, and messier.
Along with the tortas, most of the options at 100% Taquito are the street food of Mexico City: tacos, quesadillas, sopes, molletes, banderillas, etc. The cheeky interior here is meant to resemble the taco trucks that ply Mexico City (and Houston, for that matter). With an air-conditioned seating capacity over 150 and liquor available, it's like a monster truck version of its humble inspirations.
