I'd like to start a campaign, right here, right now, to make Arguello Super Market's roast turkey sandwich ($7.99, with cheese and avocado) the National Sandwich of San Francisco. It is, quite simply, the best turkey sandwich, ever. Thick slices of moist, freshly roasted turkey form a base as far from the shudder-worthy, dried-out turkey sandwiches of memory as possible, layered in a strata of well-salted white and smokey-rich dark meats. From there, the turkey is topped with lettuce, onion, tomato, and pickles, lending a refreshing and tangy crunch. Add pepper jack and avocado, and you'll be rewarded with a generous layer of salty melted cheese and a massive pile of the buttery, ripe good stuff. I mean, c'mon—avocados are the pride of California, the epitome of deliciousness that we dangle in front of our east coast friends with an almost cruel sense of pride. Your bread of choice should be Dutch crunch, of course—the crisp-sweetness of the roll perfectly encases the flavorful mouthfuls of sandwich just waiting to be devoured.
This is the turkey sandwich that dreams are made of, housed unassumingly behind the deli counter of a grocery store. What better sandwich is there to represent our beloved city, a place of secret alleyway bars and outer neighborhood hidden gems? I, for one, would be proud to have this sandwich representing us.
