Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
Houston is city without much of an Italian sandwich tradition, so Ponzo's in Midtown is a very welcome stop for sub fans. Around for about a decade, its roots are, oddly, in sunny southern California, but this tiny family-run storefront eatery delivers on familiar Italian-American sandwiches, both hot and cold.
One of their best is the Ponzo's Original Sub ($7.95) that was "first served in 1955" at its Pasadena predecessor. Encased in white sandwich wrapping paper that quickly bears a few expected grease stains, the 9" sub is served in easy-to-share quarters. The slender roll is toasted and filled from top to bottom with thin slices of tomato and provolone then double duty each of mortadella, cotto salami, and hard salami atop shredded iceberg lettuce and a layer of diced pepperoncini. Judicious use of Ponzo's tangy house-made vinaigrette helps to tie the fillings together for a terrific, harmonious result.
