First Look: Marrow Fritters and Pig Parts on 15 Romolo's New Menu, San Francisco

Any place that can mix a mean cocktail and sling some seriously excellent bar food may well be approaching a point of bar nirvana—bar-vana, if you will. 15 Romolo in North Beach reaches that bar-vana.

It's got all the requisite cool-bar accoutrements: alleyway location, photobooth, Edison lights, tatted-up bartenders (oh, hello). It's got some of the best cocktails in the city. What's more: it's long been a dependable spot for some great bar food: Thai chicken wings, brunch waffle shots, and a much-lauded burger.

So when I heard that chef Justin Deering, formerly the chef de cuisine at Cafe des Amis, was taking the helm of Romolo's kitchen and changing up the menu as well, I was excited to see what he'd bring to the always-playful menu.

While some things are remaining the same (that burger, for one), Deering wanted to make the menu more wine-friendly to go along with the newly extended wine list and wine-based cocktails (see them on Serious Drinks), while still maintaing their elevated bar snack credentials.

"I want it to be a place where you can come around and get good food late-night. Tasty, good, salty food," he told us. "Basically, we're making things as good as possible while keeping it as simple as possible."

From fried pigs ears to clams and chorizo, check out the new menu offerings in the slideshow!
