Row House Café's Smithsonian sandwich ($8) is appropriately named, as this is all-American, museum quality grilling-of-cheese-between-bread on display. Cheddar (choice of mellow aged or extra sharp) makes for maximum melting, and amply buttered potato bread provides a crispy contrast to the gooiness within. It comes with a side of tomato relish, which is fine, but the way it should be framed on the gallery wall is with a side order of tomato basil soup ($4.50/$6.50).



Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.

The sitting-room environment of the café (which serves three meals a day plus coffee and alcohol of all stripes) gives it a homey feeling. It seems odd to have couches in a restaurant, but when there's grilled cheese being dipped into tomato soup, everyone should feel like they're at home, and the living room furniture contributes to that.
