You knew, right? That August is National Sandwich Month? Well, at Serious Eats, every single month is National Sandwich Month. It's a holiday we actually celebrate daily in the form of BLTs and lobster rolls and falafel and and and [insert umpteen other sandwiches here].
But what sandwiches are best for parties? Note: these can be served at Sandwich Month-themed parties or anything-themed parties.
Egg Salad, Salmon, and Radish Sandwich Loaf
Let's be honest, this is basically a sandwich cake (pictured above). You take a whole bread loaf (we used Pullman) and slice it lengthwise, then stack on various savory ingredients. Egg salad with olives, butter with crisp, peppery radishes, smoked salmon with crème fraîche, capers, and dill. Once the loaf is assembled, it gets cut crosswise into one-inch-thick slices. It's like three tea sandwiches for the price of one.
Grill-Pressed Italian Party Panini
Here's a giant Italian party panini that should wowza your guests. The layers go something like this: mortadella, Genoa salami, provolone, and hot capicola topped with marinated veggies, pepperoncinis, roasted red peppers, and lettuce. The whole affair then goes over a medium-low fire and is topped with bricks to compress it down into a warm panini. "This was seriously one the greatest things that came off my grill in a while," professed our grilling columnist Josh.
Sausage and Ricotta Pizza Sandwiches
Bust out the supermarket pizza dough for these sandwiches. Roll the dough onto a sheet pan and brush it with butter and sprinkle on the green-can Parmesan cheese (yeah, we went there), dried oregano, and garlic powder. Stuffed inside the pizza-sandwich: Italian sausages, a chunky red sauce with fragrant basil leaves, and crumbles of whole milk ricotta.
Pork Belly Buns with Spicy Mayo
Buns count as sandwiches, right? [Sandwich gods nod.] Soft bun swaddling crisp pork with pickled accouterments. A platter of these = instant party win.
Herby Goat Cheese Ball
Picture a DIY sandwich station with a bulbous, herb-flecked goat cheese ball at its center and slices of baguette all around. You'd strategically locate yourself near that ball, right?
