In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.
Popular with the lunch crowds from nearby Touro Hospital, Milk Bar's sandwiches and milkshakes are hefty enough to satisfy the worst mid-day hunger pangs. The Wolf Me Down ($7.95) uses an unusual combination of hummus and mozzarella to jazz up a roast lamb sandwich. When you grab half the sandwich, you're treated to the delightful experience of finding it still attached to the other half by ropes of melty cheese.
Unfortunately, the huge pile of lamb on my sandwich was decidedly on the dry side. Some spinach, red onion, and tomato brighten things up a bit, and the hummus keeps things creamy, which is enough to salvage the experience. The Wolf Me Down may not be spectacular, but it's more than a solid lunch option.
