Cricket Lounge, otherwise known as the bar of the Cincinnatian Hotel, is easy to miss. Tucked away in the back next to the much fancier and larger Palace restaurant, it's cozy and quiet, with a few regulars and travelers decompressing from their days.

But the Cricket Lounge and the Palace share the same kitchen and the same executive chef, Jose Salazar, who spent four years working with Thomas Keller. Jose has constructed one of my favorite sandwiches in Cincinnati: the Cubano ($12). A straightforward take on the traditional pressed sandwich, the crunchy bread is the perfect complement to the juicy ham and tender roasted pork. Crispy pickles, melty swiss cheese and just the right amount of mustard complete the sandwich.
Pair that with one of the best happy hours for wine lovers in the city—half off wine by the glass between 4 and 7 p.m. everyday. Winning combination, right? Every sandwich comes with the choice of shoestring fries, farm greens, or kettle chips, but I recommend asking your server to substitute the cream of San Marzano soup with your meal for a small upcharge, which is the best tomato soup I have ever come across.
