A Sandwich a Day: Torta Ahogada from Mextiza in Portland, OR

A Sandwich a Day

A different sandwich profiled every single day.

In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know.

Mexican Food

Recetas deliciosas to transport your tastebuds south of the border.

Mextiza is a newish Mexican restaurant in Portland that has a popular older sibling, Autentica. Mextiza offers over 60 brands of tequila, and dishes that are indigenous to the many regions of chef Oswaldo Bibiano's native Mexico including Toluca, Sinaloa, and Hidalgo, among others.

Lunchtime at Mextiza is bustling, with a selection of terrific sandwiches, enchiladas, and an amazing dish of eggs with rice called Tacos Callejeros. The sandwich highlight is the Torta Ahogado, slowly cooked sliced beef that's simmered in a red sauce and served with refried beans, onions and thinly sliced radish. The combination of tastes and textures—especially the crispness of the radishes—is terrific. Another favorite is the Sandwich con Lengua Frita: fried tongue with spicy habanero mayo, served with spicy potato salad. It even made me think I might eat tongue again sometime in my future.
