Cook the Book: 'Bangkok Street Food'

20120309-196536-bangkok-street-food.jpgThai food has been working its way into our takeout routines for quite a while now, and with good reason. There's something very crave-worthy about a spicy plate of pad thai, creamy coconut milk curry, and fresh summer rolls.

But as is the case with many imported cuisines, you have to wonder what's lost in translation when you stroll into your local Siam Palace. That missing element is street food—the roadside stands, the market tables, and the hawkers that are such a huge part of the Thai eating experience.

This week we're hitting the streets of Thailand with Bangkok Street Food, a combination cookbook-travelogue from Belgium-based couple Tom Vandenberghe and Eva Verplaetse who have spent years eating their way around Asia. Bangkok Street Food is the kind of book that can easily go from kitchen to backpack, with simple but fiercely authentic recipes and the sort of travel guidance that can only come from really passionate eaters.

We'll be making our way around the best Bangkok street eats this week via recipes from Bangkok Street Food so be sure to stock up on the fish sauce and birds eye chiles. On the menu: the real-deal Green Papaya Salad complete with chewy dried shrimp, a fiery Grilled Beef Salad from Isan, a Thai take on Deep-Fried Chicken, plus a few more that will be sure to change the way you think about Thai cooking.
