In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.
Barbur World Foods
This international market, with a specialty in Middle Eastern foods, is one of my favorite places to shop in Portland. The variety of foods, beer, and wine is great, plus the prices are reasonable. It's owned by Myrna and John Attar, who are the same people behind the terrific Lebanese restaurant Ya Hala, so you can also expect fresh prepared foods from the deli counter: hummus, baba ghanouj, tabouli, and roasted lamb on basmati rice, and freshly baked pita.
One of the highlights is what happens when you order the pita bread—watch them place the dough in the brick oven and just a few minutes later, you have piping hot, magnificent, just-baked pita. Good luck trying not to eat it before you get home.
The falafel sandwich is rolled in the fresh baked pita with lettuce, tomato, and tahini sauce. Middle Eastern comfort food at its best. And if you're in the mood for something sweet, the baklava is out of this world.
