A Sandwich a Day: Naughty Nannie at The Sandwich Spot in San Francisco

A Sandwich a Day

A different sandwich profiled every single day.

In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year--so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. --The Mgmt.

Many a brave soul have braved the line at Ike's Place, and with good reason. But having tried the Naughty Nannie ($7.99) at The Sandwich Spot, I may be tempted to give up my spot at Ike's to another sandwich-lover willing to put in a three-hour wait. You'll see many similarities between the two—stacked sandwiches served hot with much attention to flavor and little to health, a signature sauce (here, "bomb" sauce, a garlic-laced ranch sauce), and an insouciant flair for creative sandwich names.

The Nannie is one of a number of innuendo-laden titles (The Porn Star is somewhat less subtle), and it's as tasty as one would hope a naughty sandwich would be. Hot turkey, cream cheese, avocado, and bomb sauce are served on your roll of choice (we went with sourdough) and topped with lettuce, mustard, and peppers. Per our server's insistence, we took his offering of foil-wrapped bacon on the side, after being told it would "blow our minds" with deliciousness.

He wasn't wrong. The flavor of the smokey, salty bacon went wonderfully with the nicely roasted, thinly sliced turkey (the above photo was taken pre-bacon addition). And the creamy mash-up of avocado, cream cheese and sauce led to messy, decadent mouthfuls.

The same friendly server threw in a big chocolate cookie as well—it was a little cakey for my taste, but loaded with delicious, quality chocolate.

The Sandwich Spot may not have Ike's famed reputation, but that's all the more reason to hustle over to the small surfer-style Marina shop before word gets out.
