A fresh lobster roll in Maine never sounds like a bad idea, but it sounds ridiculously necessary after a morning of kayaking with the LL Bean Outdoor Discovery School in Freeport. We hopped into the SE Ford after paddling on the water near Wolfe's Neck Park and headed to Harraseeket Lunch and Lobster. Your smart phone may not be smart enough to find it at first—it's tucked into a small marina in South Freeport.

Order at the window then wait for your number to be called, taking in the crisp harbor air to pass the time. You're literally on the docks (you could touch a boat if you wanted to). Seats are at a premium, so grab a picnic table as soon as one frees up.


The $14 lobster rolls are served on the classic New England split-top bun, brushed with butter and griddled so the outside gets crisp while the interior is soft and steamy. The sweet lobster lumps piled inside aren't dripping with mayo, thankfully; just enough to keep it all together. It's a fresh, unfussy roll served in an idyllic outdoor setting that'll make you feel like you're in a postcard from the Vacationland state.


We also got a crab roll ($9.75) so it didn't feel left out. While it's no lobster roll (breaking news, I know) it comes with a generous pile of fresh crab shreds that are spilling out the same griddled and buttered bun. It's a good, fresh-tasting second roll to munch on after the lobster roll is no more.


This sort of qualifies as a sandwich..

There are a couple windows for ordering. The one with the long line is for most of the menu: the rolls, seafood chowder, fried clams, fishwiches, onion middles, fries, etc. But the second one, sometimes with no line at all, is for dessert like their fresh-baked blueberry pie and crisp, and the Big Mac-sized whoopie pies. We could barely finish half of the whoopie. It's a two-handed job and requires some serious jaw-stretching.


Harraseeket Lunch and Lobster is cash only and BYOB, so pack the Allagash and blueberry soda. But don't delay! The season ends October 15th. They re-open in May.

Note: Harraseeket is located in South Freeport on the Freeport Municipal Wharf, just off Main Street. It's about a ten minute drive from Downtown Freeport, which also has a Main Street, which can lead to confusion.
