Mustard Seed Cafe, with prime corner real estate in Los Angeles' busy Los Feliz neighborhood, is that prototypical go-to spot. It's got a solid menu of slightly elevated diner eats, a smattering of outdoor tables, and good speedy take-out for that lunchtime emergency. The food may not be revelatory, but it's reliable, comforting, and easy—part of my regular rotation.
Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
Recently I've been enjoying the chicken salad sandwich ($9.95), a satisfying assemblage of creamy, flavorful chicken salad topped with bacon, tomato, and avocado. The chicken salad avoids vapidity with nice crunch from scallions and celery, and it achieves that perfect salad sandwich consistency, rich and velvety, without becoming wet and runny. The bacon (turkey or pork available) is always crisp and the avocado consistently ripe. Perhaps best of all, it's served on what for L.A. is not a bad onion bagel—small, moist, and not too bready, holding the otherwise messy sandwich together admirably, and making it a great meal to eat while working at the computer.
Like all of Mustard Seed's sandwiches, it comes with your choice of mixed green salad, potato salad, or a crunchy red slaw. I've tried them all, and they're all solid, just like Mustard Seed itself.
