Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
A cup of coffee from Blue Bottle alone is worth braving the line at their Ferry Building location. But waiting can also give rise to some excellent ideas—like ordering one or both of the small, simple, and perfectly delicious sandwiches. Each is served on a quarter of crusty sweet baguette (from Acme Bread, just down the way) in a coffee filter, halved and lightly layered with high quality ingredients.
The Gruyere and Butter ($3.75) is French simplicity at its finest. The combination of high-quality cheese and bread is unbeatable. The swath of sweet, fresh butter provides a nice touch of added fat without taking away from the salty pungency of the Gruyere.
For something a bit more substantial, the Ham and Cheese ($4.50) combines thinly sliced Prather Ranch ham with Beemster goat cheese. The tang of the cheese with the saltiness of the ham is addictively good. Each small sandwich is an excellent snack on its own; combined, it makes a simple, satisfying lunch.
