In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.
Turf n' Surf Po' Boys is a funky food cart in downtown Austin with a shipping container as a kitchen decorated with peace signs, a fishing net, and surf board. It's one of those places that makes you think, shoot, Austin, you truly are a special place. Most of the menu can come in either po' boy or taco form. Since this is not the Taco a Day column (!), we ordered the Fried Oyster Po' Boy.
Before we go any further, the bread needs to be discussed. It's on a healthy-looking oat bread. Are they allowed to call this a po' boy? Even as an oat enthusiast, I scrunched my nose a bit. But once you accept that this is a po' boy with a healthier, hippier makeover (the bread's baked with organic flour, and they use all compost-able cutlery) that still tastes good on its own terms, you might just come around to it.
Now that we've dealt with that, the oysters. Delicate, juicy, and fresh-tasting, they're fried in a not-too-heavy coating. They might get buried under the giant pickle slices and salad's worth of tomatoes and greens but there are plenty, enough for some oyster-ness in each bite.
