With the Serious Eats All-Star Sandwich Festival fast approaching (this weekend!), we couldn't think of a better week to feature The Big New York Sandwich Book, a 99-recipe collection featuring sandwiches from the city's best including a few of our Sandwich Fest vendors.
If you've been following A Sandwich a Day, our ongoing chronicle of this sandwich-heavy city's lunchtime offerings, you'll probably have an inkling of the daunting task that The Big New York Sandwich Book authors Sara Reistad-Long and Jean Tang undertook when seeking out the best of the best.
They've assembled a well-rounded cast of New York sandwich favorites, from highbrow "haute sandwiches" (from Jean-Georges Vongeritchen and Dan Barber) to new-school sandwich staples (think Num Pang's seasonal, Cambodian take on the banh mi) and rounded it all out with old school New York staples like Defonte's monster heroes.
This week we're going all out with some SE favorites from The Big New York Sandwich Book. We'll be checking in with our go-to Italian spot, Maialino for a spicy Salame ala Diavola, swinging by the bar at Gramercy Tavern for a Piedmontese Roast Beef with Pickled Ramp Aioli on Foccacia, and splitting a quick General Tso's Fried Tofu Sub at No. 7 Sub.
