A Sandwich a Day: Pulled Pork Torta from Izzoz Tacos in Austin, TX

A Sandwich a Day

A different sandwich profiled every single day.

In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

Even if you come to Izzoz Tacos (pronounced eee-zoz) with the best intentions of ordering tacos, you may leave the cart with a pulled pork torta ($6.50), which is fine (as long as you also try the tacos at some point). The pork is juicy, slightly sweet and smoky with a punch of heat; it's been slow-roasting overnight with ancho chiles.

The pile of meat is packed into a crusty roll that's smeared with chipotle aioli and layered with lots of pickled slaw, which we liked as much as the pulled pork itself (!). It's creamy with a vinegar-zing, and when you dive nose-first into the sandwich, you immediately whiff up the fresh cilantro (what makes the slaw green).

Added bonus: the torta's served on a bed of garlic fries. They really aren't kidding about the garlic, either. Diced garlic bits coat the crisp, hand-cut fries; the garlic cologne will linger on your fingers even after a couple washes.
