Market Scene: Downtown Austin Farmers' Market

We caught the tail end of the Austin Farmers' Market in Republic Square Park on a recent Saturday. It was nearly 12:45 p.m. so we had to sprint-shop before closing time, but we still had a chance to chat with farmers and pizza-makers while they were breaking down their booths.

There was a whimsical selection of sauerkraut from Straight from the Vine, Texas honey from Round Rock Honey, and beautiful heirloom tomatoes in big crates that we were ready to eat with our hands like apples.

We also spent a good while chatting with Christian and his wife Jamie of Bola Pizza (stay tuned for the full report on Slice soon). Even after two burgers, two tortas, and four tacos that morning, we made room for a "Godfather" pie (smoked mozzarella, hot fennel sausage, caramelized onion, and a simple sauce made with San Marzano tomatoes) from his wood-fired oven.
