In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.
Alma is better known for its association with Popeye the Sailor Man than Blondie, but a version of the famed Dagwood Sandwich, which we've had on the brain lately, can be found at The Red Rooster Bistro.
The restaurant, well known for offering more than 30 types of pie, makes its own bread—a cross between sourdough and King's Hawaiian Bread with a nice, tempered sweetness. It's the perfect match for the big stacks of roast beef and corned beef, layered between slices of American and Swiss cheeses. Pickle, onion, lettuce and tomato accompany all that meat and cheese.
But it's the trio of condiments—Italian dressing, honey mustard dressing and Miracle Whip—that really tie this creation together. It's sweet and hearty, savory and tart, all at the same time. Be sure to leave the toothpicks in, though. All those wet ingredients can lead to a quick dissolve in your mouth. Or in your hands.
