At Meat Cheese Bread, there's so much sweet barbecue and smoky Nueske's bacon in the air that it's a little tricky to consider any experience there truly vegetarian—just sitting there, you're likely to inhale a bit of meat.
But the roasted mushroom sandwich ($6.95) is still worth ordering. The thinly sliced mushrooms are silky without being slimy, earthy and plenty satisfying, topped with goat cheese and pleasantly bitter frisée. The sherried onions balance out the sandwich with a bit of acid; this is definitely a grown-up lunch. My only complaint is that the roll got a little bit soft.
