A Sandwich a Day: The Kevorkian at Geoff's Sandwiches in Providence

A Sandwich a Day

A different sandwich profiled every single day.

Few joints get as crowded during lunch hour in Providence as Geoff's Sandwiches on Benefit Street. Though the tiny shop is nestled on College Hill beside both Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, its clientele treks from all over downtown Providence to try one of dozens of creative sandwiches. The bulk of the menu, which is written on chalkboards that cover two walls, consists of cleverly-named, over-stuffed sandwiches. Offerings range from vegetarian hummus-and-veggie on wheat, to funky turkey, ham, and cranberry sauce on a large roll.

The sandwich featured above is The Kevorkian, a somewhat morbidly-named combination of hot pastrami, bacon, cheddar cheese, Frank's hot sauce, and Dragon's Breath sauce. The last component is a dangerous combination of hot peppers (think Scotch bonnets and habaneros) and wasabi, as well as... well, the rest's a secret. The hearty Kevorkian will certainly carry you through a busy afternoon.

A highlight of lunch at Geoff's are the free half-sour pickles, which are brined in a giant tub in the center of the store. I've been known to eat an unladylike number of these in one sitting. But act fast on two-for-one Tuesdays, when lines stretch out the door for the great free sandwich deal and supplies are known to run low by dinner.
