As Dunkin Brands, the corporate parent and franchisor of many Dunkin' Donuts locations, prepares its upcoming IPO, there has been no shortage of new products released by the company lately; following on the heels of their Big n' Toasty, they've just released the Blueberry Waffle Sandwich: egg and cheese with sausage or bacon on two blueberry waffles.
I was not looking forward to this tasting. Two weeks ago, I tried Dunkin's new chicken salad sandwich, and found it so inedible I decided not to write about it. Last week, I went to six different locations trying to find a heart-shaped Royal Wedding donut, only to find imitations (regular raised donuts with strawberry frosting); needless to say, Dunkin' isn't my favorite brand right now.
Back to the blueberry sandwich. Watch them make it after your purchase: the blueberry waffle "buns" come out of a bag; the egg and maple sausage (or bacon) come out of a freezer and go into a TurboCharge Microwave. A slice of American cheese lay waiting on top of the waffle buns, as the microwave heated the other components. (Why, oh why, wouldn't they heat the cheese?)
First offense: the waffle was flimsy and limp. Only one side had the square grooves of a waffle; the opposite was flat like a pancake. Instead of being light and fluffy inside, the texture was dense and chewy, in the strangest way—like when you wad down cotton candy. The sandwich smelled more like blueberry than it tasted like blueberry; the maple sausage tasted more like syrup than meat.
The egg patty is no better or worse than usual, but it's overpowered by the junk around it. The sweetness of the maple sausage ruins the sweet / salty dichotomy that you find in a McGriddle or a dish like Chicken and Waffles; it's all sweet, little salty. If you're at Dunkin', do yourself a favor: stick to sandwiches with croissants and regular sausage.
