I harbor none of the usual prejudices against vegetarian sandwiches that many carnivores do. To me, a good stack of vegetables, fruits, cheeses, herbs, or tofu (matched with well-chosen condiments, of course) can be at least as satisfying as layers of beef, pork, chicken. The trouble is, I find most of the meatless creations out there unimaginative, if not utterly redundant (think: tomato-mozzarella-basil "capreses"; the tired trio of roasted eggplant, summer squash, and bell peppers; anything with hummus and sprouts...).
One of the exceptions is the Farmer's Lunch ($6.99) at City Feed and Supply, a boutique market in Jamaica Plain where you can be sure that just about everything you buy—from a quart of milk to a greeting card to a cup of coffee-—is either all-natural, sourced locally, or both.
Between the crusty, grainy mustard- and mayo-slathered Iggy's baguette are thick slabs of extra-sharp cheddar, half-moon slices of tart Granny Smith apple, frilly red leaf lettuce leaves, and—the pièce de résistance—their housemade pickled green tomato relish. A hearty choice for farmers (and urban-dwelling hipster vegetarians) alike.
