In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.
After our favorite breakfast sandwiches in America roundup this morning, many of you were clamoring for some pork roll love. Well, here it is! If you haven't spent much time in New Jersey, it's possible you've never sampled the delicacy that is the Pork Roll Sandwich. What is Pork Roll, exactly?
Sort of like a cross between Canadian Bacon and Spam, these coaster-sized circles of meat product (because honestly, who knows what part of the pig the "roll" comes from?) typically are served two or three-up on bread.
The version at Who's On Third in Spring Lake is to be commended for keeping it simple: served on a hard roll which provides plenty of shock absorption for the fatty-and-salty onslaught, you can be a purist and order it plain (top it yourself, at the table, with ketchup or mustard and plenty of pepper) or get fancy by ordering it with egg and cheese for an all-out breakfast feast (that, yes, we probably should have included in our sandwich roundup).
