Everything you need to know about eating and cooking with curds
The Grilled Cheese ($9) at the South Philly Tap Room is filled with gooey gouda and Muenster, spilling puddles of oozy cheesiness out the sides. The bread is buttered and grilled dark and crisp. The sandwich, which arrives cut in half, also comes with a cup of chunky tomato lager soup finished with a drizzle of olive oil (to complete the classic tomato soup and grilled cheese combo). Also included is your choice of thick-cut fries (with housemade ketchup!), pasta salad or an avocado-studded salad.
The sandwiches at the Taproom are a big draw (they also have an open-faced roast chicken and one with pork meatballs) but their beer list is equally thrilling. I paired my grilled cheese with a Founders IPA ($5), which had enough bite to stand up to this cheesemonster of a sandwich.
