It's never fun to read about food recalls, especially when they involve spices that make you think warmly of egg nog, holiday cookies, and seasonal cocktail garnishes. I'm talking about nutmeg. Yesterday, the FDA recalled nutmeg sold under the Frontier Bulk and Whole Foods Market brands from Mincing Overseas Spice Company in South Brunswick, New Jersey. At first the news sounded sad (should I fear nutmeg all December?) but really it's just more inspiration to grate the fresh kind. The pre-ground shakable dust loses flavor and aroma quickly, and nothing beats scraping it along a microplane. Do you buy it pre-ground or grate fresh nutmeg? Take the poll! »
