People try to game these coupons from both sides. I've seen a bunch of businesses that try to tack on extra fees or required "gratuities" at the last minute.
One take-out restaurant silently added 10% to the bill for using a Groupon. I noticed the discrepancy in pricing because I had enough time to compute the cost in my head (with a rough estimate for tax) while I waited in line. When I asked them about it, they said, since tip/gratuity wasn't included, they were adding it on for me!
If I wasn't paying attention, I'd have easily missed their sneaky trick. I presume this is pretty common because most people using these deals aren't regulars and might not know the "normal" price off-hand.
