Today Serious Eats Is One!
Congrats folks! I remember when you just a mere morsel! Look at you now, you're a five-star meal!
Stir-fried Wikipedia
ak - i'm still sorting through all of my photos (i just got back from china) it is the EXACT same restaurant!! small world!
i asked my mom to translate and she said something along the lines of stir fried factory raised chicken, but she wasn't 100% sure, she thought it was a bit weird, she also didn't recognize it.
Stir-fried Wikipedia
Wow. My mind is blown. I took the exact same picture last month. Small world. Does anyone know exactly what the chinese says though?

I'm so glad you posted this! I was looking for it all day yesterday. I agree about Walken's awful teleprompter reading, but I thought it was a fun skit.

Korean Shrimp Roll and Hot Dog Pizzas
holy crap that is amazing.
There Will Be No HP7 Spoilers on Serious Eats!
PHEW! i was worried! ;)
we're going to be spoiler free at yumsugar too. wish the same could be said for my fellow sugar sites (i won't even put the link just in case, but they have the big spoilers and I now have to avoid talking to half of my co-workers) I even thought about reading that photographed version of the book just so it wouldn't be spoiled.
what will you be eating when you read it?
Big in Japan: The Pizza Hut Double Roll Pizza
i have seen this photo a bajillion times and yet, my mind is blown each time.
What's Your Favorite Local Ice Cream?
Bi-Rite Creamery's salted caramel is amazing!
QotD: Fill in the blank: I can't keep _____ in the house.
The stupid sour gummi bears from Bristol Farms, they're different and more delicious than most sour gummi bears. They must be made from crack, the pack is usually gone in 3.4 seconds.
The Serious Eats Doughnut Glossary
my friends and i had this debate once, a long john is practically unheard of on the west coast. here they're just called chocolate bars or maple bars depending on the frosting.
Being Mario Batali's Sous-Chef Was No Picnic
What a great story, thanks for sharing! I always try to save my confident cockiness for after the knifewielding is over...
Snoopy Sno-Cone Machine
i HAD to have one, and it never worked right. I always pretended it did as to not let my parents know i was so disappointed in my new treasure (i thought they'd never buy me anything else again if they knew). If you need shaved ice/snowcones, get yourself one of those ice block shavers at the asian grocery store for 10 bucks instead - they work amazingly!
Cook the Book: Do-It-Yourself Power Bars
I love this book, it's so beautiful and well put together. I was actually thinking about trying a few of these recipes this week.
All About Crawfish
This picture is a lie. The guy's fingers and face would not be nearly that clean!
Here's My Favorite Brownie Recipe—What's Yours?
I'm with you Ed, bring me the brownies, cookies and pies anyday!
I'll have to give these ones a try, but Nicole Rees had a great one in Fine Cooking last year. It's won me several friendly office bake-offs since, here's the recipe.
But walnuts, really? Great brownies have no need for walnuts.
Food Fight: Food Network Awards to Debut Sunday
These awards seem so weird, I wonder who will accept the award for all these food items...
Here are a bunch of pictures of chefs on the red carpet (they clean up really well!) and for a greater read, check out side salad's detailed experience of being in the live award audience. the pictures of the audience at the end are pretty great.
Bunny Bao
oh my gosh, these are amazingly cute! I need to make them!
Top Ten Taiwanese Snacks
Oh and I know that it's not a found in Taiwan only sort of thing (considering you can buy a pack here in chinatown for 99cents), but I have a secret place for those taiwanese pineapple cakes.
Top Ten Taiwanese Snacks
oh god i love everything on that list. the shaved ice is my personal favorite, but don't forget the fruit, the fruit there f'ing rocks. It's been 10 years since I last went there, but I dream of those guava.
French Toast Waffles
Waffles and french toast together at last? Yum! Dorie's puffed pancake was fantastic (don't know if it's in the pancake book, but its in her first book Sweet Time), so I think I'd trust her for waffles too.
Bread with Back Support
Something tells me I would fall asleep on it, wake up and have the upper top corners eaten off. Does it lay flat? You could get two and have a really ridiculous "you as sandwich" photo shoot.
David Eyre's Pancake, Oven-Baked And Poofy
What a weird coincidence, I just made my first puffy pancake last week. I used a recipe from Dorie Greenspan's first book. Oh, and a lot of people call these a "Dutch Baby."
Ed Levine, P.I.
I embarked on an accidental pizza investigation recently. We were headed to go-karts in burlingame (just south of san francisco) and had to wait a couple hours before track time. To kill time we drove around and stumbled across toto's (scroll down to see the picture). An oldschool joint with damn fine pizza at a really good price to boot. At the counter you can view the pizza perfectionists assemble the pies and toss the dough. It's out of the way, else I'd have been back a bunch of times by now. I'd definitely add it to your list of places to investigate!
Is There a Serious Eater Who Hasn't Thought About Opening a Restaurant?
My mom (who is not in the restaurant business, but 95% of her friends are) once said to me, "If you have someone you hate, and I mean really, really hate, encourage them to open a restaurant."
Awake Shack 2007
yah, but who reads that site anyway? ;)
The Serious Eats Doughnut Glossary
Growing up in Minnesota, we didn't actually have a ton of local doughnut shops at the time, so we had to get them from grocery bakeries.
My local grocery store had both long john's AND eclairs - the key difference being the filling. Long Johns had none and sometimes had sprinkles or coconut topping - where as eclairs were filled evil.
The Barefoot Contessa's Empire
The article that is attached is over 2 years old. She has released another cookbook since then, and has completed her adorable barn.
Being Mario Batali's Sous-Chef Was No Picnic
Of course. Happy Birthday, Cindy's dad. Many happy returns. Ed
Being Mario Batali's Sous-Chef Was No Picnic
Hey Ed, can you tell my dad happy birthday?!
Korean Shrimp Roll and Hot Dog Pizzas
I am so glad I don't live in Indiana!
All About Crawfish
Thats the slow way to eat them for beginners. I like to do it all in 2 steps.
-pull off the head, simultaneously pulling off the first section of shell
-bite/pull meat while pinching tail all in the same motion
The Serious Eats Doughnut Glossary
wanted to add my comments about the Long John.
where i've been, a twisted Long John is the same as bow tie from Dunkin Donuts fame.
Food at Work
meowises, it's simple...double the recipe. =)
The Serious Eats Doughnut Glossary
i always see chocolate long johns and i remember eating them growing up! they should be available at Tim Horton's throughout Canada...
Does anyone know what exactly is in a 'Dutchie' donut? they are delicious..and mysterious.

whirrrrrrrrrr......Balushi is rolling over in his grave...seeing how bad this show has gone downhill....where is the HUMOUR?....where is the satire?...where is the IMAGINATION?....why am I even missing Chevy Chase (and you're not!)
In Videos: Saturday Night Live Parody of Top Chef
Hilarious. They have really got it down, right to the faux hawk and Padma's nonchalance at giving the chefs a seemingly impossible task. Fun.

@ Loco... Snl has always used a script. Whether or not they always followed it, SNL has never been purely improvisational, even in the first five years.

Thanks for posting this! I was searching for this video everywhere but thought it was taken down. Love the Marshmallow Peep foam line too!

What I'd love to get my hands on are the old Dan Aykroyd parodies of Julia Child... now THAT was THE classic SNL-take on food-related TV!

I thought if was "great" fun.

They were ALL reading from the teleprompter. What's up with that??? Yes, I know I'm really old (viewer from SNL's first five years), but when did they stop doing it improv-style? Now I remember why I stopped watching...
But I loved the faux-hawk reference, and the ridiculous ingredients. Almost like the real Top Chef! And some of the lines were pretty funny. Especially the separating emulsion!

Did she say cook a pizza or cook beets and couscous?
That's exactly how I feel watching some of the challenges - like the "only one aisle of the grocery store" quickfire. They need to stick more to the "create a dish along this theme" challenges rather than "cook fish for Eric Ripert using only a zippo and tin foil."
In Videos: Saturday Night Live Parody of Top Chef
I somehow get the idea that SNL did the whole reading off of the telepromter on purpose. I don't know why they think it's so funny to see him do that, but I have to believe that it was done intentionally.
Today Serious Eats Is One!
I seriously don't remember life without Serious Eats... Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, and many more to come!
Today Serious Eats Is One!
Hey, Serious Eaters. Thanks for all your good wishes. I feel like all of you have become part of the Serious Eats extended family. You all make it fun to come to work every day.
Today Serious Eats Is One!
Wow. Only a year? And I thought I came late to the party! When I started posting a few months ago, I just assumed it was a site that had been around for ages, and that somehow it had just been slipping under my radar.
You've done a really great job to make seem like something that's always been here. And what a fantastic ability you have to attract the most fascinating and pleasant members. Double congrats!
