The Vegan Experience Days 22 and 23: Charting My Cravings

i'm super-ultra-psyched about these vegan experience columns, mostly because they're written from the perspective of a (somewhat?) reluctant (right?) vegan! i love the idea that you'll be eating more vegan and ovo-lacto veg foods after writing this, and hopefully inspiring more people to do so, too. i'm always weirded out that, unless you label yourself a vegetarian or vegan, people will assume you want meat with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. i don't think the frequency and minimal thought with which people consume meat makes sense, considering the environmental cost (among other things!). i think this column illustrates how do-able and delic a vegan or veg diet can be, even if you're not going to make a permanent, always-forever diet change!

The Burger Lab: Foolproof Jucy Lucy

i made a few juicy lucys just the other day. i didn't get quite so scientific about it, but they were pretty good. or i was pretty drunk. whichever!

Do You Have a Hard Time Eating Animal-Shaped Foods?

generally, no; i mean, how can somethig dino- or, like, tarantula-shaped be anything but appealling? chocolate bunnies always weirded me out a little, tho, and i think it's just because they're too cute. cuteness levels are significantly diminished by the presence of teeth marks.

Dinner Tonight: Kimchi Quesadillas

i'm not going to lie--i had one of these at the kogi truck on a visit to LA, and i thought it was as painfully inedible as it sounds. mushy, hot kimchi with cheese and an oily tortilla? no thanks.

Has Anyone Had Sister Schubert's Rolls or Marshall's Biscuits?

i love sister schubert's. i haven't had them since moving out of the south, so i think i'm going to check for them at my local grocery store after work ... wish me luck!

Serious Eats: Sex Foods

i've always heard--and even kinda felt--that unagi was an aphrodisiac. i have a story which i totally wish was appropriate enough to share here!

other than that, most foods inhibit my sex drive. i never feel sexy when i'm full.

Dinner Tonight: Chilaquiles Rojos

i thought chilaquiles usually included eggs?
either way, when i make what i call "chilaquiles", i fry tortillas, top it with eggs, chorizo if i have any, cheese, and a similar red sauce--or, sometimes, guacamole (just as good a combo, if not better).

Cheese-Filled Bacon Roll, Too Much of a Good Thing?

oh, and i'd also like to remind people that one instance of excess is not fatal or artery-clogging. if you're to the point where two bites of bacon and cheese will cause cardiac arrest, that is indeed very gross.

From Serious Eats

Cheese-Filled Bacon Roll, Too Much of a Good Thing?

i actually made this about a week ago, on my roommate's suggestion/demand (he can't cook even the simplest of weaved-bacon treats). it was, for all you haters, delicious--even if it's not possible to eat more than one or two pieces.

it really does make a pretty novel hors d'oeuvre, especially if you drain the bacon adequately (!), so give it a try. and quit being so damn uptight!
