What is your favorite fast food on road trips?
mcdonald's nuggets, i can pop the whole piece straight into my mouth, great stuff for convenience, and i don't need to worry about messy drippings all over or dirty hands.
I like the taste of slightly burnt____
meat! any type of meat tastes better with charred spots.
Do you know where your meat really comes from?
i dont want to know. knowing too much and thinking about eating isn't really that appetising at all.

How I can control my overindulgent tendencies?
food porn! look at pictures of food, imagine myself eating them, then go to bed dreaming about them. haha~ it makes me hungry, but at least it sort of satiates
Sad Foods: What do you eat in times of trouble?
potato chips, those with lots of msg in them, and a can of coke to wash the aftertaste. this always work for me!

Born, raised and still living in California. In'N'Out (traditional double-double with onions, fries well-done) is definitely acceptable roadtrip food. And, a few times a year we'll bring it home, usually after a yardwork marathon that runs past dinnertime (too late and too tired to cook, way too grubby to get out of the car in public).
Once in a while we'll grab Breakfast Jacks from Jack In The Box on a road trip. Or, if it's getting late and we haven't reached our planned stopping point, we'll hit Sonic if we see one along the route.
The man of the house claims to really like KFC (probably because I've never mastered fried chicken, and have basically given up on it). But, in the seven or so years I've known him, I've yet to see him actually stop there.
In general, we just don't like fast food. A "counter-service" place or diner is almost always the preferred alternative.
Oh. And, it's not fast food, but what about Cracker Barrel?
What is your favorite fast food on road trips?
Seems my favorite In-N-Out burger is pretty popular with road trippers. I live in Texas and rarely get out to California, but when I do, its an In-N-Out rampage. I dream about these burgers and fries.
My other road food weakness is James Coney Island, roundabout Austin and Houston. The chili cheese coneys are the best dog ever, the tots are perfect and they serve beer. What more can you ask for?
What is your favorite fast food on road trips?
I used to love seeing Waffle Houses for the first time on trips from NY to FL. Now that I live in FL, they're a big "so what" ... LOL. If I had to pick a fast food place, it would be Checkers. OMG...The only french fries on the planet I can eat without ketchup!!
What is your favorite fast food on road trips?
Sonic all the way. And in the south, Huddle House. SO much better than IHOP.
What is your favorite fast food on road trips?
My long drives from Thunder Bay, Ontario, to Mississauga, Ontario (about 17 hours) were punctuated by Tim Horton's. The coffee keeps you going, and the snacks range from the very bad for you (i.e. TimBits-donut holes to the Timmie's virgins) to the relatively good for you (i.e. yogurt and berries, whole grain bagels), depending on your mood.
What is your favorite fast food on road trips?
I always pack a cooler for road trips, but on the rare occasions I've had fast food, I have to agree with In and Out burger.
What is your favorite fast food on road trips?
Sonic! Cherry limeades and tator tots and cheese sticks...
And if I am lucky to be in the Piedmont Triad (NC), Cookout. Cookout shakes are the best! Also burgers that are soooo good.

We have a tendency to do marathon driving when we go cross-country, like mainly driving all night and into the next day when we stop and sleep. So we end up with a sort of day and a half long day. Because we are confined to the van that long, we really only eat breakfasts. Our good luck holds well for picking good breakfast places, including Lilo's in Seligman AZ.... and others that I can't name now. But once down south (we both have early childhood and early adulthood memories) and will just start drooling at Waffle Houses and in Florida, Huddle Houses. Nothing fancy, just good quantities and I like the fact that you can see eggs being broken, bacon and home fries on the grill, nothing that is not prepared fresh right in front of you.

I also had some grilled fruit, peaches & plums that were charred to deliciousness!

When I order a latte, I request the milk be steamed to at least 190 degrees. The barista's always bulk saying the milk will burn! I must like that carmelized flavored milk :)

a properly blackened steak with a nice crust on the outside and rare on the inside is one of my small pleasures. i serve it with eggs fried over easy and toasted garlic french bread. blackened catfish are very good also but you have very little room for error.
Do you know where your meat really comes from?
I live in PA. We have lots of corporate farming. It's big business is PA. There are a few local, organic meat farmers. They sell their stuff in Lancaster or the Food Coop in Delaware and when given the choice as I did 2 weeks ago I chose the "buy local" option in order to support the local farm community. You may be correct thought, I may be a virus. When I see meat that looks good in Wegman's or Costco, I will buy it. I take it home and serve it with very little thought. This is a personal choice I have made. Whether it is personal, selfsh, or any other thing (Apathetic, selfish, overpriveledged) it is what it is.
I live in a farming community. I see more of where my food comes from than most people ever do. Again I will eat what I want to. No one is going to rid the planet of corporate farming anytime soon. It holds up the entire economy of many states. Farming as an issue is much bigger than meat.
That is a topic I would love to tackle, but not on SE.
I must go be lazy and selfish and prepare my meat ladden Labor Day Cookout menu. Enjoy!
Do you know where your meat really comes from?
i would love to have 2 oz. of meat from like 18 different cows along with 1 oz. of meat from like 10 different hogs, 2 eggs from like 2 hens, mushrooms from like 8 different plants and 3 large onions from like 2 different onion plants. what a great meat loaf.
Do you know where your meat really comes from?
Part of the problem with McDonalds and all fast food restaurants really, is that the meat source is so unidentifiable! Your one hamburger could have meat from like 18 different cows and you just don't know!

Do you know where your meat really comes from?
The majority of our red meat comes from the woods approx 7 miles from our home. My husband is an avid hunter and we are able to live off venison for the majority of the year. So we do know where it came from and how it was processed. However, we still buy chicken, pork and the occasional t-bone steak from the grocery store.
How I can control my overindulgent tendencies?
I love food. But as lauren said above- learn to love running :) I am an exercise fanatic and count horseriding, cycling and marathon running as hobbies. This is how I stay 45kg (yea, i'm tiny) and still get to indulge in glorious food ^^
How I can control my overindulgent tendencies?
I've come to accept my food loving tendencies but I have learned to eat one or two bites to taste and then stop. I've also learned to love running and to love the curves! I will NEVER be skinny but my doc says I'm at least healthy!
How I can control my overindulgent tendencies?
LiveToEat, I can definitely sympathize! My coworkers are constantly bringing in snacks to share, because we look at food all day!
I wouldn't consider myself too much of an overindulger but if I have a craving for something, I'll spoil myself and let my body have what it wants (if available somehow and not terribly expensive.) Not sure how to unspoil myself, so if anyone has any advice about that, let me know...
The orange or lemon zest tip sounds great if it works!

How I can control my overindulgent tendencies?
Food porn is definitely a hobby for me. That's why I joined Serious Eats! I'm working on being a more mindful snacker, so thanks everyone! It's just difficult with a desk job in an office full of candy dishes... I'll take it one day at a time.
Sad Foods: What do you eat in times of trouble?
RE: ebraun
Aww ((Supportive hugs))...
Strange how food and grief go hand in hand...I mean that goes wayyyy back... I guess it's a way to comfort ourselves in our own hour of need. My grandma made GREAT fried green tomatoes and to this day I wish I'd gotten her recipe. :(
Sad Foods: What do you eat in times of trouble?
Unfortunately I've had a lot of experience with this lately. When I lost my mom last month I think we all ate our own weight in smoked brisket, potato salad and washed it down with Shiner beers and Lone Star. Seemed to fit the bill. My mom made great fried green tomatoes, always fried in bacon fat. That's going to get made before too long on one of my inevitable bad days.
Sad Foods: What do you eat in times of trouble?
When I'm really down I opt for the quickest food fix I can find...I don't crave sweets though (even when I'm pretty sad) so I'd probably opt for some pasta with just butter, ground pepper and parmesan cheese with a bit of kosher salt and crumbled dry basil. Then, the next day I have a pasta hangover and regret the whole thing...yeah, cuz I ate the whole darned pot. ARGH! ;)
