Buffalo food... any ideas besides wings.
Beef on Weck rules! Locally, Rockland Bakery's saltstick roll is a great option if you can't get to a Buffalo bakery.
Who Likes Grape Soda?
I love this stuff. Something so satisfying in an artificial way that an oreo or a twinkie is. I try to limit myself to one or two in a year. I also don't mind saying that some of the enjoyment is derived simply from burping grape soda burps for a few hours after.
Groundbreaking Diet Tips from the 'New York Times'
Classic. Well played NYT! Padma (don't get me started) is a MUCH more relateable example than someone like Ed (who's adventures in weigh loss I am loving), right? I mean they're giving her a sit-com, so she obviously plays in Peoria...

Video: 'Look Around You - Water'
One season featured a pretty funny bit featuring casseroles as a technologically advanced, new fast-food trend.
Thants.

Cornucopia Salad at Georgia On My Thighs
recipe continued: bamboo shoots, oreo crumbles, red ants, dried apricots, rice krispies, sunflower seeds, pepperoncinis, corn nuts, shredded carrots, pineapple chunks...;-)
Wal-Mart Accused of Knock-Off Girl Scout Cookies
I'd love to hear GSA's take on this. I'd also like to see them train the girls for commando-style raids to take down Wal-Mart stores accross the country. I mean, if they're not gonna be busy selling cookies, let's make good use of that time!

Video: Whole Chicken in a Can
This is exactly as disgusting as I imagined it would be, the first time I saw one of these on a shelf at the supermarket. What are people actually doing with a whole, canned chicken? (Or do I not want to know?)
RIP 'We Are Happy to Serve You' Coffee Cups?
@Adam: That would be interesting, if true. Although, for as many times as I can recall Andy Sipowicz having one with a suspect in the coffee room, I remember my childhood barbershop being fairly littered with those things.
At least I'm not alone in considering a paper cup a souvenir...
RIP 'We Are Happy to Serve You' Coffee Cups?
You know, I'm a coffee drinking, native New Yorker in my mid-30's, and I've been waiting my entire life to be handed a beverage in one of these cups!
At this point, I feel like I'd have to save the cup if I ever get one.
There are ceramic versions available, I believe.
The Fest: Our Humblest Apologies to All
Ed,
I'm really sorry to hear about all of the challenges your festival faced out West. I had been quite jealous, as of late, that I wouldn't be able to get out of NYC for this.
As a festival organizer myself, I understand that the way things wind up happening in reality can differ significantly from the way they had been envisioned. I hope you are not discouraged from attempting something like this again. I would love to be able to offer any assistance or expertise that I can as a concert/festival promoter and F&B professional.
Cheers!

The Beatles Did Not Have a Sweet Tooth for Jelly Babies
@Adam: Can't wait to read it!
Had actually never seen one until today. Always just assumed "Jelly Baby" was British for "Gummy Bear."
The Mr. Wizard-style demo is fantastic, btw.
The Beatles Did Not Have a Sweet Tooth for Jelly Babies
I always thought these were more Dr. Who's thing, anyway.
Should Restaurants Charge No-Show Fees?
Yet another sign of the times. Granted, we as diners should always do our part to cancel a reservation with as much notice as possible. However, to be charged a steep fee if we don't or can't give notice, while more or less fair to an establishment, will probably do more in the long run to alienate regular and potential clientele. The real trick here is that are some restaurants that can get away with this and many, many restaurants that have no business even thinking about charging for a missed reservation. Unfortunately, that determination is mostly subjective. For my part, it tends to be a (from-the-gut) call I make during the reservation process--if I don't feel like leaving a CC# with my name a number at a particular place, I stop the reservation, tell them why and make another call. I haven't gone hungry yet!

Oh god..."What ARE birds? We just don't know." That gets me every time. It's a crime that everyone hasn't seen this.

Yeah, at 1000 degrees! Geeze Kenji, can't you even cook eggs? :P

This series was brilliant. Wish more people knew about it. I prefer the educational video format of the first season to the news magazine format of the second. But the casserole sketch was pretty funny too.

Ugh - the scientist's poor hand. Thants for posting this.
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
A Hole in One!!!! My grandfather used to make these for me when I was a very little girl, visiting him in Lancaster, PA. He was not a golfer. He was first-generation American of Swedish descent, who had grown up in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Wal-Mart Accused of Knock-Off Girl Scout Cookies
I must defend the Girl Scouts and their cookies. Our Council does a lot with the money; they support 3 or 4 camps, give camp credit to girls who sell cookies and enable troops to do activites they could not do otherwise. My troop took two trips with the money we earned.
Anyone who thinks Girl Scouts are just about cookies doesn't know much. They are helping girls become responsible, sharp women. My daughter was a Girl Scout for 12 years and earned a scholarship, attended 3 Wider Ops and participated in all sorts of leadership programs. She says Girl Scouts were a big part of why she is so successful today! Don't knock the Girl Scouts or their cookies. Boy Scouts sell popcorn and I always buy! Cookies end up saving parents money because the troop doesn't have to ask them since they earned cookie money.
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
Some great names here - I love Egyptian Eyes especially! But wow: over 200 comments, and apparently no one else calls them "top hats". (And yes, I always thought my mother invented them, too. :) )
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
My hubby made these for me for me all the time when we were in college - we call them Eggs in a Basket.
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
@Ed Levine - My mom called them "Egyptian eggs" as well. I think me, you and Embackus's friend were the only one. It seems to be the least known name for them.
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
Eggy in a basket, from V for Vendetta.
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?

Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
Everyone knows it's called a "bunny egg". My grandmother invented it.
Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?
Growing up Dad called it a Bulls Eye (from Rhode Island). We always loved when Dad had to make breakfast! He cut the hole with a shot glass so the hole was just big enough for the yolk part and the rest of the egg ran over the bread so you had to flip it and cook that side too! Just don't over cook it and it won't be dry. The hardest part was buttering both sides of the bread. I get around that now by using a brush and softened butter.
Who Likes Grape Soda?
I stopped drinking soda about 20 years ago.
But I miss Fanta. Grape Fanta. Fanta Uva. Very cold, with two straws, straight from the glass bottle.
So I've had Boylan's once. It's nice, but too grown up. Not sweet enough.
Who Likes Grape Soda?
Love the grape Crush pop, but it's the only one I'll drink.
Who Likes Grape Soda?
Love, love, love fruit sodas. I've weaned myself off non-diet soda after 39 years, now I'm a Coke Zero drinker.
But when I want a treat? I reach for a Welch's.
And if they still made Strawberry soda, I'd reach for that too.
RIP Welch's Strawberry. You are much missed.
Who Likes Grape Soda?
I like all sorts of soda. I guess I rarely drink grape because typically I'm looking for "cold caffeine" and less sugar. But, if we are at a cookout or other event where tubs of sodas are iced down and I find a grape, I'll go for it.
Now, if you want to find most of the grape soda lovers in the world, head to South America, especially Brazil. Fanta orange and grape are big sellers there - if you need a break from the guarana ...
Who Likes Grape Soda?
Love love LOVE grape soda! Transports me instantly back to my grandparents house where it was always stocked in their fridge (still is). There's something about the artifical grape taste, the fizz, the pretty purple can that makes my mouth water. It's a, oh semi-annual treat for me but each time I have it, I fully appreciate all it has to offer. :-)
