Neely's Barbecue Parlor: Another Ersatz Barbecue Joint New York Doesn't Need

While it's hard to find good 'cue in NYC, there's no shortage of bad. The new Neely's BBQ place on the Upper East Side is among the worst. Four of us went there a few days ago for dinner and the joint was jumpin'. Mostly as we discovered from people actually expecting to see the Neelys in person. But no-celebrity chef sighting for us. We wanted their Memphis-style 'cue. We each ordered something different to get a taste of the menu in general. Across the board the food was waaay salty and stringy. The ribs were dry and left a strange aftertaste. Almost like hint of charcoal lighter fluid. The best thing I can say about the pulled pork was that it was...pulled. Dry, with no depth of flavor. My order of spicy pinto beans with burnt ends was neither spicy nor could I find a single burnt end. The mashed potatoes were a fluffy mound of salt. The service was efficient and friendly and most definitely "get'em-in-get'em-out."

As my wife would say, we've been there twice. First and last time. My suggestion is not even make it a first.
