Blogwatch: Fiddlehead Salad

I finally tried fiddleheads. The sign at Whole Foods said to boil for 10 mins. WAY too much boiling. Didn't love them as a result: http://whatsonmyplate.wordpress.com/2009/05/10/fiddleheads/

Indoor Grilling: Twice-Cooked Mock Tandoori Chicken

The braising seems unnecessary. I just made a decent tandoori recipe from Cook's Illustrated. With some tweaking it could be great.

Clearly I'm not Canadian enough. I've NEVER had a beavertail. I need to work on that.

Grilling: Stuffed Poblanos with Black Beans and Cheese

I found stuffing them this way a pain, I just cut the pepper in half, and stuffed them like little boats, put them on the grill this way, and didn't turn them. I also added a little cheese on top, for a even better touch, serve with fresh pico de gallo

Let's Pizza: Vending Machine Mixes Dough, Bakes Freshly Made Pizza

To all those people who think its unhygienic... would you rather eat from a tuckshop, fast food, restaurant or any other establishment that handles food not even knowing where they store or how they handle their foods!? Have you not seen the videos on TV showing some bad food handling practices, which they only show the one caught out, but what about the millions of other places that have not! At least these machines have all individual packaged parcels for each pizza and everything is contained in containers where nothing can get in. I know which id rather choose!! No sweaty dirty cooks making my pizza!

i've been crafting an idea for a banana curry ice cream at home, this is amazing!

the way people detoxify fiddleheads in Japan:

boil water. add 1tsp of baking soda per 1l (about a quart) of water.
add fiddleheads, cook for 1-2 min.
drain and transfer fiddleheads into cold water (and you can keep them in the water, in the fridge- change water once a day)
after this, you can use it for whatever.

I've already commented this, but tempura is my most favorite way to eat spring vegetables. It just brings out the subtle flavors..

@erin79: You could make these the same way, just in a 350 degree oven instead of on the grill.

@lambowner: I didn't peel the skin off of these. They didn't get to point of being totally blackened on the outside, just slightly charred. I think the skin added a nice grilled flavor and texture, so I would recommend leaving skins on, unless they're completely burnt.

Is there a way to do this without grilling--maybe baking them instead and then broiling at the end for a few minutes on each side?

I would try it for novelty's sake, but I wouldn't expect much from it.

I second all the previous concerns and add to them the sanitation aspects. Is there a water supply that's provided on demand? Airport water?? How old could the flour be? Any additional protein making their home in it? Plus, I shudder to think of the insects and vermin that would find their way inside.

No yeast in the dough, and definitely no time for it to rise properly. What's the point? I'd rather have a good quality frozen pizza (does that exist?) with a properly proofed crust.

@bruisedbuddha- I don't think that bloody-mary would be anything memorable either.

I'd like to see an automatic bloody-mary machine be successful first. Then maybe I'd trust an auto-bake vending machine. Maybe they could then be installed side-by-side...

if its a choice between a premade spamwich sandwich from a vending machine,(made with real meat paste, what kind is left to your imagination) or a vedo pizza I'll take the vendo pizza. I really hope they put them in rest stops especially.

At least you don't have to worry whether the pizza guy washed his hands before making your pie.

in just 3 minutes?! Remember when we used to have to wait 30 minutes for crappy pizza! Ahhhhhh.... technology....

@doctrine - they even have a little stick in them that's supposed to mimic the bone in a wing I think. we just eat them b/c they are good sources of protein, absorb sauces well and have good texture not b/c we're looking for something to be meat substitute per se. anyways, i just thought you might get a kick out of the part about the stick "bone."

I'm a little disappointed that "mock chicken wings" exist.

What Is a BeaverTail? An ObamaTail?

I've lived in western Canada for forty years and have never seen a beavertail. Besides, I'm from Racine, Wisconsin where the kringle reigns. It's the most scrumpdelicious of all pastries. I wouldn't mind some real strudel though.

A beavertail sounds boring, like a commercial donut. Yuck! And I saw a TV show recently where the host was served one with cold shredded cheese. A donut with a pile of mozza was an horrific looking mess. Worse than poutine.

What Is a BeaverTail? An ObamaTail?

mmm... Beavertails. The Killaloe Sunrise really is good. If only Beavertails were more widely available. Since moving to Toronto 8 years ago I've been deprived. Not that I ate them all the time in Ottawa but maybe one each winter. There is something special about eating a hot Beavertail while skating or walking along the Rideau canal.

Great to see that President Obama took the advice of those who recommended he grab a Beavertail in these videos shot in anticipation of his arrival and welcoming him to Ottawa.

Welcome to Ottawa, President Obama!
What should President Obama do in Ottawa?
What should President Obama know about Canada?

Out in the prairies they're giant round pieces and are called Elephant Ears....
